You Can’t Step into the Same River Twice

“No man ever steps into the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and
he’s not the same man” — Heraclitus
These words capture something subtle but deeply true about life.
I once knew a spiritual mentor who stayed in my home whenever he was in
town. He often spoke about detachment, stating that a person who has
renounced worldly ties should never get attached to any family. Yet over time,
I saw a change—he is now closely connected to a particular household. Though
he appears the same, something about him feels different.
Around the same time, I saw a different kind of struggle. A friend’s daughter
has been going through great distress, unable to let go of a past relationship.
She holds on to what once was, although it no longer exists.
These two experiences, although very different, point to the same truth.
Just like the flowing river, both people and emotions change. What we hold on
to is no longer the same because the individuals involved have changed. Our
memories are real, but reality isn’t. Situations too are never fixed. A phase of
attachment, of love or loss—none of it stays exactly as it is. Life keeps moving,
even when the mind resists.
Like the river, life is always flowing. And perhaps healing begins when we
gently accept that we cannot step into the same river again—not because
something is lost, but because everything is moving forward.
If Heraclitus says everything is always changing, another philosophy that I have
been inspired by lately, Stoicism, asks, “How do we live well inside that
reality?”
The answer that the Stoics give is worth pondering on: “Stop trying to control
the river. Control how you stand in it.”
